First field of interest: Singular Integral Equations. Since 1960 - Algebraic Methods in Analysis.
I was born in Warsaw, May 25, 1931. My father, a world-known hettitologist (archeologist) Stefan Przeworski, was killed by Nazis' January 1940. My mother Janina was also an archeologist. She died 1991.
Since my activities (as a child) in the Resistance Movement during the second World War and the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, I have been distinguished in 1982 by the Warsaw Uprising Cross.
I married Stefan Rolewicz January, 1952. He is at present a professor at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and publisher of Polish Mathematical Journals. We have 2 sons: Jerzy, born 1954, mechanical and electrical engineer and Jan, born 1959, a geologist engineer and a specialist in computer sciences. Both are married and have children.
I have obtained M.A. in Mathematics at the University of Warsaw, Ph.D at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1958, D.Sci. (habilitation) at the same institute in 1964 and the title of professor, granted by the Council of State, in 1974.
I have been appointed at the Technical University of Warsaw 1954-1960 as an assistant and lecturer. Since 1960, I am appointed at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, since 1974 as a professor.
In academic years 1973/4 and 1974/5 I was appointed at the Faculty of Cybernetics of Technical Military Academy in Warsaw in order to lead an experimental course of Mathematics based on my ideas of Algebraic Analysis.
At the moment, I am author (or co-author) of more than 140 scientific papers, 45 other publications, 7 monographs (edited in Poland, the Netherlands and England) and 4 text-books (in Polish).
Nine persons granted Ph.D. under my supervision.
I was organizing a cyclic international conference Functional-Differential Systems and Related Topics (1979, 1981, 1983, 1985) and Different Aspects of Differentiability (1993, 1995 together with Piotr Antosik and Krystyna Skórnik, in 1995 also with Ryszard Rudnicki). After all these conferences were edited proceedings.
I was several time invited for lectures to Canada, USA, West and East Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Soviet Union, Bulgaria, also to France, England, Sweden, Italy, Australia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece. Longer visit abroad:
Among obtained awards: St. Banach award of the Polish Mathematical Society (with S. Rolewicz) in 1968; award of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1972 (for a book); a common award of Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR and the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1978.
I am the reviewer of Mathematical Reviews and Zentralblatt für Mathematik since 1966.
In years 1981-96 I was a member of the Scientific Council of Mathematical Institute at the Warsaw University of Technology, in years 1991-96 - a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (in both cases elected for consecutive cadences).
Since 1987 I am a member of the editorial board of Demonstratio Mathematica, an international journal published by the Warsaw University of Technology, since 1997 - of Scientiae Mathematicae, an electronic journal connected with Matematica Japonica, since 1998 of Matematica Japonica and of Fractional Calculus and Applied Analysis (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences).
I was acting in the Union of Polish Teachers (a trade-union) 1972-76 and from 1980 till dissolving of trade-unions. I was the last president of that union in the Polish Academy of Sciences before the martial law has been introduced. I was acting in that union also in years 1984-85.
For my activities, I have been distinguished by including of my name in several international biographical dictionaries, for instance: Who's Who in the World (1978/79), 5000 personalities of the World (American Biograph. Institute, 1984) and others, also by the Golden Cross of Merit in 1985.
From 1985, after a surgery on my spinal marrow, I am handicapped, I can walk only with crutches for a short distance or to use a wheel-chair.
Present scientific interest: Applications of Functional Analysis and Theory of Metric Spaces to Optimization.
My main interest over the last few year is mathematical optimization, in particular application of functional analysis to optimization. I wrote a book concerning optimization of linear systems Functional analysis and control theory (two Polish editions 1974, 1977, German edition 1976, English edition 1987). Now I am mainly interested in optimization over metric spaces. Theory in which I am working now can be called convex analysis without linearity. Together with D. Pallaschke I wrote a book Foundation of Mathematical Optimization, in this subject.
Previous: Theory of Non-locally Convex Spaces. Locally convex algebras.
I have started my scientific work in the theory of non-locally convex spaces. I wrote a book about the subject Metric linear spaces (first edition 1973, the second one 1985). Together with D. Przeworska-Rolewicz I was working in the algebraic approach to the theory of linear operators and we wrote a common book Equations in linear spaces (1968). Together with W. Żelazko I wrote a series of papers on linear topological algebras.
In the paper On orbits of elements I gave the first example of hypercyclic operator in Banach spaces. The theory of hypercyclic operators is now develop very fast.
In the paper On drop property I introduce drop property and investigate its property. After this paper several authors were working in the subject.
In the Institute I am chief of the Division of Mathematical Analysis and Head of Publications Department.
I was born in March 15, 1932. My mother Hanna died in the time of war at 1944. My father Jerzy, mechanical engineer, died in 1951, at the day when his enterprise was nationalized.
I married Danuta Przeworska January, 1952. She is at present a professor at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. We have 2 sons: Jerzy, born 1954, mechanical and electrical engineer and Jan, born 1959, a geologist engineer and a specialist in computer sciences. Both are married and have children.
I have obtained M.A. in Mathematics at the University of Warsaw, Ph.D at University of Warsaw in 1958 Dr. Sci. (habilitation) at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1962, and the title of professor, granted by the Council of State, in 1970.
I have been appointed at the University of Warsaw 1954-1958 as an assistant and aspirant. Since 1946, I am appointed at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, since 1970 as a professor.
At the moment, I am author (or co-author) of more than 140 scientific papers and 4 books.
13 persons granted Ph. D. under my supervision.
I was several time invited for lectures to Canada, USA, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, China, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, England, Sweden, Italy, Australia.
