Title of the lecture: Greedy methods and democracy in approximation theory and functional analysis
Abstract: According to Wikipedia "A greedy algorithm is any algorithm that follows the problem-solving heuristic of making the locally optimal choice at each stage." In the talk I will present some basic algorithms of this type used in approximation theory. In particular I will discuss such algorithms and their results in the case when a Banach space $X$ has a basis $(x_j)_{j=1}^\infty$ and we want to approximate an element $x\in X$ as well as possible using only a fixed number of $x_j$'s.
