From 1980 to 2009, the Scientific Council of IM PAN awarded annual prizes for outstanding doctoral theses. Initially, the award was funded by a grant from Mr. Marek Wacławka to the Institute of Mathematics PAN and was named the Marek Wacławka Foundation Award. Due to the depletion of the foundation's funds, the Director of IM PAN decided to replace it with the Director of the Institute of Mathematics PAN Award for distinguished doctoral theses defended at IM PAN.
