Announcement

The award was established in 1981 by Zofia Kuratowska, the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IM PAN), and the Polish Mathematical Society (PTM). According to the regulations, the award may be granted to individuals who have not reached the age of 30 by the end of the year preceding the award and who have not received PTM awards (except for young mathematicians' awards) or the scientific award of the Division III of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Among the past recipients are many distinguished Polish mathematicians.

In addition to candidates considered on its own initiative and recipients of the PTM Award for Young Mathematicians, the Jury will consider all other candidates who submit a complete set of the following documents:

  • self-application or nomination for the award (signed scan)

  • a list of publications and proof of acceptance for publication of those works that have not yet been published

  • a brief scientific CV including the date of birth

  • files containing up to seven works (files should be named in a way that clearly associates each file with a specific work, preferably using the work's number on the list of publications)

  • a reference letter from a senior academic researcher.

These documents should be submitted electronically by March 31, 2025, to the provided address.

The award will be granted by the Jury by May 1, 2025.

  1. The Kazimierz Kuratowski Prize for scientific achievements in mathematics was established in 1981 by his daughter Zofia Kuratowska, the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IM PAN), and the Polish Mathematical Society (PTM). The prize is funded by endowments established by the prize founders and by other sponsors.

  2. The prize is awarded at most once a year to individuals who have not reached the age of 30 by the end of the year preceding the award and who have not been recipients of PTM awards (except for young mathematicians' awards) or the scientific award of Division III of the Polish Academy of Sciences. This period may be extended by no more than three years in the case of long-term (no less than 90 days) interruptions in scientific work caused by health or family circumstances. In particular, it is possible to extend the period by 18 months for each child born or adopted. These periods do not accumulate if they occurred simultaneously. The Jury decides on the length of the extension period. Both published and accepted-for-publication scientific works of the candidates for the award are evaluated. The candidate must meet two conditions:

    1) completion of any degree (bachelor's, master's, or doctoral) in Poland, or having a Polish affiliation in the year of applying for he award,

    2) demonstrating significant connections with the Polish mathematical community, such as collaboration with mathematicians with Polish affiliation, participation in conferences/seminars organized at Polish universities, co-organization of conferences in Poland.

  3. The Jury consists of individuals under 41 years of age appointed for a period of four years: four by the General Assembly of the PTM and four by the Scientific Council of IMPAN, with both institutions replacing two of their Jury members every two years. In addition, the Jury includes a representative of the IMPAN Directorate.

  4. The Jury elects a chairman and a deputy chairman for the following year annually. Neither of these functions can be held more than once.

  5. The Jury is obliged to treat all recipients of the PTM award for young mathematicians from the previous three years as candidates for the prize. The Jury may, on its own initiative, consider other candidates meeting the conditions of point 2.

  6. The Jury meeting is convened by the chairman or, in their absence, by the deputy. The Jury makes its decision to award the prize before May 1 of each year by a simple majority of votes in the presence of at least 5 members. In the event of a tie, the chairman of the meeting makes the final decision. In exceptional cases, if the chairman presents the members with the works of the candidates nominated for the prize, it is possible to submit a vote by correspondence to the chairman before the Jury meeting.

  7. The Kazimierz Kuratowski Prize is presented to the laureate during the PTM scientific session. The laureate of the Kazimierz Kuratowski Prize is invited to deliver a lecture on a topic of their choice during the PTM scientific session.

  8. Amendments to the prize regulations are approved by the founders of the award.
