The Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IM PAN) announces the Barbara and Jaroslav Zemánek Prize competition for 2024.

The prize was established from funds donated to IM PAN, the institution where Prof. Zemánek worked for many years, by Prof. Zemánek and his wife.

The prize will be awarded for achievements in functional analysis with a particular emphasis on operator theory to an individual who will not be 35 years old by the end of 2023. For individuals taking maternity leave before the age of 35, the permissible age is extended by the duration of the maternity leave.

The prize may be awarded only once. The prize is international: there are no restrictions regarding the affiliation of candidates. The laureate will be selected by an international jury appointed by the Director of IM PAN. The prize amount in 2023 is 13,000 PLN gross.

Candidates for the prize may be nominated by a group of three individuals with a PhD in mathematics, with international renown.

The deadline for submitting nominations is June 15, 2024. The announcement of the results is planned for September 2024. Information about the laureate along with the jury’s justification will be published in the Notices of the AMS. The laureate will be invited to IM PAN for a ceremonial lecture and prize presentation.

The laureate of the 2022 prize was Dr. Amine Marrakchi from École Normale Supérieure.

The laureate of the 2021 prize was Dr. Jochen Glück from the University of Passau.

The laureate of the 2020 prize was Professor Michael Hartz from the University of Saarbrücken.

The laureate of the 2019 prize was Professor Martijn Caspers from Delft University of Technology.

The laureate of the 2018 prize was Professor Karl-Mikael Perfekt from the University of Reading.
